Background
The client engaged Sunspeed to complete 2 x relocations across their US data centre estate. We were engaged following successful relocation projects for their UK estate through our Data Centre partner.
Their current infrastructure was experiencing stress and the current sites were not able to support growing demand for power, space and cooling.
The client was undergoing a broader transformation of their data centre presence, consolidating their footprint to enable savings on energy and space and preparing for future addition work to support load-intensive research applications.
The Requirement
The client required 2 x separate moves, one in San Jose, CA, and the other in Ashburn, VA. The equipment included 60 x devices of critical networking and storage equipment split across the two locations.
The client also required Sunspeed to complete the decommission of redundant equipment in their former environments.
The Solution
Sunspeed provided comprehensive technical project management support from the beginning of the project to support relocation planning and execution.
The project was preceded by several weeks of planning calls and workshops to ensure all details, including timings and rack plans/cabling matrices were optimised and to spec.
Sunspeed completed the migrations on weekends to minimise disruption to end-users. In advance of the day, a pre-cable was completed to enable ‘plug and play’ connection at the destination site. This included dressing and labelling all copper and fibre connectivity to enable seamless connection on the migration day.
On the migration days our team handled the decommission of hardware to an agreed sequence.
We then executed the physical migration of equipment using specialist IT-spec packing materials and flight cases. We also provided goods-in-transit insurance to ensure the full value of equipment was covered during movement.
At the source site our engineers connected all devices according to the destination patch plan.
The Outcome
Sunspeed’s solution enabled the end customer to deliver on their broader data centre strategy without disruption to vitally important end-user services.
The client reported a successful migration with all systems functioning as expected within a short window.
